SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES:
CAPE COD RAIL TRAIL (BIKE TRAIL): When rail cars stopped rolling around the lower Cape years ago, someone had the brilliant idea of pulling up those miles and miles of track and paving them over for a bike trail. Now, every year, thousands and thousands of cyclists of all ages don their helmets and hop on the Rail Trail. Beginning in Dennis, it roams through forests, fields, marshes and cranberry bogs all the way through Wellfleet. It's a splendidly safe place to ride, especially for children. Please remind your children to be aware of their surroundings; faster riders come up from behind unexpectedly, so try to avoid roaming (especially suddenly) from one side of the trail to the other. Also remember the Massachusetts law requiring helmets on children 12 and under.
CRABBING: Kids love to catch crabs, and it’s easy to do! Take a clothespin and tie a 4 foot piece of twine through the hole in the center of the spring. For bait, use any left over chicken bones or crack open a mussel or a clam, then pinch it with the clothespin (to secure the bait). Drop the clothespin down between the rocks of a beach jetty and wait (don’t let go of the string!). In a few minutes, you’ll have a crab ... they hold the bait so tightly with their claws that you can pull them right out of the water.
CAPE COD BAY ADVENTURES, DENNIS: Here’s a great opportunity to literally immerse your family in the waters of Cape Cod Bay. After a short boat ride on the impressive “Venture Inn 2,” families can choose among water trampolines, banana boat rides, Yamaha Waverunner rides, swimming or just watching the fun.
